First recorded from the Conquistadors during the Battle of Mactan, the colonists were driven back and defeated by the native tribesmen using an already developed weapon-based system of martial arts. That year was 1521.

Kali, Escrima and Arnis are terms for the Philippines’ traditional fighting art, referred collectively as Filipino Martial Arts. It’s a weapon-based system utilising bladed weapons (knives, kris, balisong etc), sticks and various improvised weapons (latigo). As these weapons are just extensions of the flesh, hand-to-hand techniques, joint locks and grappling are also included.

The Philippines doesn’t have a martial art, it has a fighting art, proven and tested on the battleground, since 1521.
